Climbing is the canvas where the artist can paint. Climbing can also be the scale which balances our ego, our gluttony, our worth; humanity, happiness, sadness, and true character. Climbing for me is what the rabbit hole was for Alice. Once you fall in, it opens you up to a void of infinite wonder. I think through climbing I’ve gained a reference point from which to go further in life.
I find it appalling that so many climbers when asked about their interests beyond climbing have very little to say or mention. Climbing should be a gateway or bridge through which one should discover the ability to step out of their comfort zone and embrace insecurity and adversity. I think it’s unfortunate that some use it as a staircase to ignorance.
I think what I’m most passionate about is that intuitive auto pilot state of mind and movement that climbing can bring us to. It is George Lucas’s Luke Skywalker using the force, Shakespeare writing a sonnet, Ineista scoring in the 93rd minute, and a politician giving the speech of his life that lays the foundation for a revolution. The meaning I find within climbing, is in discovering this intuitive zone of (un)consciousness.
How did you get started climbing? I grew up under the foothills of the Sandia mountains in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
How old were you when you started? 10
Who or what inspired you to start climbing? The freedom and wildness of the Sandia mountains offered me an awesome playground as a kid. The climbing gym later offered a place for me to hone skills and progress as a teenager. Locals like Lance Hadfield, Carolyn Parker, John Kear, and Elliot Bloch kept me in check.
Who served as your inspiration in life? My mom always told me life is about taking calculated risks and she bought me my first shoes so I reckon she deserves pretty major props!!! My family has given me a lot of inspiration. In addition, I’m inspired by my close friends Much Mayr and Hans Joerg Auer without them I think I would have ditched my climbing pursuits for snowboarding and playing soccer some time ago. My housemate Flusch, inspires me with her selflessness, patience, and never ending energy (she’s a teacher working with handicapped children). Terje Hakkonsen and Axel Pauporte inspire me through their snowboarding prowess and style. The way Rob Machado surfs waves with such non chalantness! Andres Iniesta the way he can read a soccer game and make the most amazing passes to set up Leo Messi and Co., I wish I could onsight like that! I’m telling you he’s the best player in the world right now! It irks me that the gel headed twat Crstiano Ronaldo is so hyped,!!! WTF? Above all, I find Nelson Mandela awe inspiring!
What was your first outdoor climb? A granite boulder near U Mound, New Mexico
