Athlete Bio

Name: Mark Synnott

DOB: 12-11-69

How did you get started climbing? My dad took me to watch the climbers at Cathedral Ledge, NH when I was a kid and I became completely inspired by the idea of scaling rocks. I did my first forays into the vertical at age 15 and since then I have never stopped.

Who served as your inspiration in life?

As a young climber I was inspired by all the people who were out there on the cutting edge, particularly in the alpine realm.

What was your first outdoor climb?

The Big Flush, a super dirty and gross 5.6 at Cathedral Ledge. My buddy and I climbed to within 50 feet of the top with a rope we found in the tool shed, no harnesses, no carabiners, no rack ,and no clue. We thought Converse Chuck Taylors were rock shoes.

What do you do when you're not climbing

I try to spend as much time as possible with my wife and family. I have three children and we love to do various sports and spend time together outside. I also have a 27' sailboat based in Steuben, Maine and I love to get out on the ocean and let the power of the wind take me on an adventure.

What do you feel is your best accomplishment, outside of climbing?

My best accomplishment outside of climbing is my family. I have three amazing children.

What do you feel is your best accomplishment within climbing?

I am proud of all of the big wall first ascents that I have pioneered over the years. No one really stands out above the others.

Shameless self-promotion -
