How did you get started climbing?
I climbed EVERYTHING as a little kid. You name it. When I was about 12, I stumbled into an outdoor shop that had a climbing wall. I was too young to climb it (lame!), but there was a sign saying that a local climbing gym was opening, Vertex Climbing Center. I went to the grand opening and have been climbing ever since.
How old were you when you started?
I was about 12 years old when I started climbing.
Who or what inspired you to start climbing?
Climbing has always been a very natural thing for me to do. I’m the only one in the family that really does it, so I think I was just meant to find it. As a sport and a lifestyle, it suits me perfectly.
Who served as your inspiration in life?
My parents for sure.
What was your first outdoor climb?
My first outdoor climb was a ladder, at age 2, propped up to the second story of my uncles house.
What do you do when you’re not climbing?
When I’m not climbing, I’m working on an organization I co-founded last year called Professional Climbers International (PCI). PCI was founded to advance the business interests of rock climbers and their sponsors by working toward 5 specific goals: Increasing the visibility of the sport, increasing the accessibility of the sport, creating a professional class of climber, expanding and enhancing opportunities for sponsorship and promotion of the sport and its athletes, and lastly, promoting and encouraging behavior and public policy that preserves and protects the natural world.
Any training advice or suggestions?
Combine your passion and your goals and you get training.
What do you feel is your best accomplishment, outside of climbing?
I feel my best accomplishment outside of climbing is working to create an organization to benefit those and that which I care about most.
What do you feel is your best accomplishment within climbing?
I can only hope that some of the climbs I have established are as inspiring to others as they were in my eyes originally. For me, to contribute inspiration into the climbing community is the ultimate accomplishment.
