Sterling Athletes Team
Name: Whitney Boland
DOB: June 18
How did you get started climbing? My brother worked at the local climbing gym. He urged me to try it one day. I was instantly hooked.
How old were you when you started? 21
Who or what inspired you to start climbing? My brother was a big inspiration. Once in the sport I found my idols. Lynn Hill of course can’t go without mentioning, and many of my friends that I first started climbing with. Like fellow Sterling athlete Jen Vennon!
Who served as your inspiration in life? People that have found a way to live their passions have always been a big inspiration to me.
What was your first outdoor climb? Wadcutter, 5.9, Torrent Falls, Red River Gorge. I took a huge whipper on it.
What do you do when you’re not climbing? Work -- which involves a lot of writing -- cook, look at food blogs, learn more about taking photos, read, spend time with the people I love.
Any training advice or suggestions? Adequate rest. Know your body and your weaknesses, and train them. Be patient. Train your mind as much as your body. Be humble in your accomplishments but driven to do better.
What do you feel is your best accomplishment, outside of climbing? Not letting life and circumstance, like having a autoimmune arthritis, get in my way of climbing.
What do you feel is your best accomplishment within climbing? My best accomplishment is allowing climbing to be a mentor. Letting it teach me something new about myself every day rather than beating me down.
Favorite quote? It’s more of a favorite paragraph. It’s from Into the Wild: "The sea's only gifts are harsh blows, and occasionally the chance to feel strong. Now I don't know much about the sea, but I do know that that's the way it is here. And I also know how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong but to feel strong. To measure yourself at least once. To find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions. Facing the blind death stone alone, with nothing to help you but your hands and your own head."
If you could have 1 superpower what would it be? Flight!
If you could have 3 wishes, what would they be? According to the genie, no good comes out of wishes.
What was your favorite childhood cartoon? I didn’t really watch cartoons. I was in gymnastics and it took over my life.
